Fiore di pietra

Historical Exhibition of the Ferrovia Monte Generoso

An engaging journey through the history of the FMG featuring documents, images, original objects and the personalities who shaped the railway’s destiny.

TOWARD THE SUMMIT AND THROUGH TIME

From 6 July 2026, a new permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the Monte Generoso Railway awaits you on the ground floor of the Fiore di pietra.

An invitation to reach the summit and be surprised by an engaging, interactive exhibition route rich in stories and testimonies, designed to convey the charm of a railway that for more than a century has accompanied travellers, dreams and wonder.

Through untold stories, images, historical documents and original objects, you will discover the most significant milestones in the FMG’s history and meet the figures who shaped its destiny, such as Carlo Pasta, visionary and “genius of Generoso”, and Gottlieb Duttweiler, founder of Migros and guardian of the FMG, who recognised its value and helped save it from dismantling.

The exhibition also takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of tourism on the summit: from its beginnings, with the opening of the Hotel Bellavista in 1890, to the facilities that welcome Monte Generoso guests today, including the Fiore di pietra and the Buffet Bellavista.

The exhibition also explores the promotion and communication that made the railway a symbol of the region: vintage postcards, stamps, tickets, timetables and historical promotional materials show how the FMG found its way into the hearts of entire generations.

And for those interested in the more technical aspects, the exhibition also devotes space to the railway line itself, the route from Capolago to the summit, and the evolution of its rolling stock — all testimony to a long history of ingenuity and passion.

A visit that enriches the Monte Generoso experience and offers a new way to experience the mountain: through its memory, its key figures and its extraordinary heritage.

The exhibition is free of charge and open to the public during the opening hours of the railway and the Fiore di pietra.

Guided tours for groups and companies available on request.
